Blue Square Premier News

Great Britain’s swimming heroine Rebecca Adlington was honoured in her absence by supporters attending Mansfield Town’s Blue Square Premier fixture against Kidderminster Harriers on Saturday. Fans applauded for a minute before the game following news of the local girl’s second gold medal earlier in the day.

The Stags’ faithful then had more to cheer as Mansfield, playing in non-league football for the first time in 71 years, raced to a 3-0 half-time lead. 34 year-old much travelled striker Mark Stallard converted a 19th minute penalty and then was on hand to capitalise on a mistake by Kidderminster goalkeeper Adam Bartlett on the stroke of half time. In between former Harriers’ winger Michael Blackwood finished off a fine move when volleying home from close range in the 33rd minute. Second half goals by Kidderminster’s Matthew Barnes-Homer and Justin Richards  reduced the arrears before substitute Aaron O’Connor sealed a 4-2 victory for the Stags in added time.

Three second half goals saw Burton Albion claw back a 2-0 deficit at half-time to maintain their unbeaten start to the season which leaves Woking pointless at the bottom of the table, whilst Oxford United finally got off the mark with a 6-3 win over Eastbourne Borough at the Kassam stadium. Meanwhile , in the battle of former League clubs, leaders Cambridge United maintained their 100%  record by beating Barrow at the Abbey and Rushden & Diamonds and Wrexham shared the points in Sunday’s game at Nene Park.

Ex Bury striker Andy Mangan netted an 81st minute penalty to deny Crawley Town a point at Forest Green Rovers, Altrincham pulled a point out of the fire at home to Kettering, who were blasted by manager Mark Cooper after the game and Weymouth continued their excellent start to the season by grabbing a point at confidence shorn Stevenage Borough. York City have also started well but were held 1-1 by determined Histon at the KitKat Crescent and Stuart Elliott and Sam Sloma struck wonder goals for Grays Athletic who scrambled home against Northwich Victoria at Bridge Road.

Newly promoted Lewes crashed to a second straight home defeat as Salisbury City took advantage of some sloppy defending to come away from the Dripping Pan with a 4-1 victory.

Meanwhile on level six of the non-league pyramid, victory in a nine goal thriller at Rochdale Town enabled  brand new fans’ club AFC Liverpool to top the Vodkat North West Counties Division One after just two games in which they have run up ten goals.
